Boat Lift Won’t Raise? Common Causes and Solutions

Published October 2, 2026

If your boat lift lowers normally but won’t raise the boat, the problem may be electrical, mechanical, or related to the weight on the system.

A few basic checks can help narrow down the cause, but if the lift is straining, humming, or not moving at all, it’s usually best to stop using it until the problem is identified.

Check the Power Supply

Start with the simplest possibility and make sure the lift is getting power.

Check for:

  • A tripped breaker or GFCI
  • A disconnected power source
  • Visible damage to wiring or controls
  • Signs that the control box is not receiving power

If the lift has no power at all, the issue may be electrical rather than mechanical.

Is the Motor Humming?

A motor that hums or clicks without raising the boat may point to a failing capacitor, poor electrical connection, low voltage, or an overloaded lift.

If the motor is clearly struggling, avoid holding the switch down. Continuing to power a stalled motor can cause additional damage.

Check the Boat’s Weight and Position

A lift that works when empty but struggles under load may be overloaded or carrying the weight unevenly.

Make sure the boat’s fully loaded weight, including fuel, batteries, gear, and water, stays within the lift’s rated capacity. The boat should also be positioned correctly on the bunks so the weight is distributed properly.

Inspect the Motor and Gearbox

If power and weight don’t appear to be the problem, the motor or gearbox may need attention.

Grinding, slow movement, unusual noises, or a lift that stops under load can all point to worn mechanical components. These repairs are best handled by a technician, especially if the system needs to be disassembled or tested under load.

Look at the Cables

Cables can also prevent a lift from raising correctly.

Check for visible fraying, corrosion, kinks, slack, or uneven spooling around the drive shaft. If the cables look badly worn or aren’t winding properly, stop using the lift until they can be inspected.
